Reflection type: Feedback

Although this week will undoubtedly be preoccupied by exams, I spared some today to stop by Mr. Karl’s office yesterday (Tuesday, May 14) and asked for some additional feedbacks. Previously, Mr. Karl remarked that I should strive to make my piece – entitled “#1″ -  less jaunty, and decrease the ways in which I was trying to get the piece offbeat. I took the feedbacks and have tried to implement over the weekend. I showed the changes I have made to the score, and Mr. Karl agreed that it sounds better now. Nevertheless, he commented that the score can still be further simplified by doing the following things:

  1. Changing the rests in between notes into ties. Instead of having rests, I should make the previous note longer by tying it into another note. This way, the score will be less intimidating as ties are easier to read and follow than rests.
  2. Be more consistent with the chord patterns. To increase the familiarity of the piece amongst the audience, it is best to only have up to three chord patterns. By doing this, the listeners will not be constantly challenged to familiarize themselves with the flow of the song, and they can better enjoy the song.
  3. Apart from making the structure of the song less complex, Mr. Karl also suggested that I check some of the clarinet parts as I might forget that the clarinet will actually sound lower than how it is written since it’s in B-flat.
I took all of these feedbacks, and have been working to weave it into my compositions this past day. I’m now at a stage where I will need to rehearse more often with Joey and Harry, the other people who are involved in my performance, to ensure that any necessary changes are made well beforehand. So far, I have had 3 rehearsals with Joey and 2 with Harry, but only once where all three of us are together. It’s very difficult for all three of us to get together, mainly because each of us also have the obligations to help other students. Since the performance is exactly one week from now, I’m aiming at having at least four more rehearsals before the actual performance.
